| Dr.
Mark S. Hoddle Director, Center For Invasive Species Research University of California             Every year California is invaded by new and destructive
species of exotic pests.  Included are
the Red Palm Weevil, resulting in annual economic losses of more than three
billion and the Asian citrus psyllid that threatens the citrus industry
worldwide.  Mark Hoddle as Director of
the Center For Invasive Species Research at UCR travels the globe in search
of natural enemies of these pests.             Non-native pests come into this country riding on
fruits and vegetables, and in other cargo imported from abroad.  Because usually there are few natural
enemies in their new environment, imported pests can cause significant
  economic and environmental damage.  In
California these creatures have ravaged farm crops while others threaten
public health.  Over the past 100
years there have been over 125 biological control projects launched worldwide
that resulted in partial or complete success in reducing the ravages of
invaded species.             In his search for natural biological controls to combat
invasive pests Dr. Hoddle has found predators and parasites that are passed
through UCR's quarantine and approved for introduction into the environment
by the U. S. Department of Agriculture.
Successful introductions can help to reduce a reliance on pesticide
usage to combat the pests.             Dr. Hoddle received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees
in Zoology from the University of New Zealand, Auckland, and his Doctorate in
Entomology from the University of Massachusetts.  He has been recognized with the National Award from the
Entomological Society of America and is widely published in the field.  He also supports the California State
  Parks system, the Nature Conservancy and the World Wildlife Fund for nature   = = = = = = = = = = = =   Scholarly
